Storyline

A female nurse managed to hang on to a suicidal patient as he dangled out of a 13th floor hospital window in northeast China's Liaoning Province while struggling to escape her grasp.

At about 16:30 on Dec. 30, 2018, the 52-year-old man, a farmer, smashed the window with a chair and was grabbed by nurse Dong Jing as he jumped out.

"He was emotionally agitated at that time. I thought about talking to him but before that, he threw a chair at me. I heard him clearly say 'I'm going to paradise'. After saying this, he climbed up onto the windowsill," said Dong.

Colleagues and patients in the ward rushed to her aid but all they could do was apply their own weight to Dong's. She grabbed the man's arm with her right hand through the window and held on to him for about seven minutes until security guards and police arrived at the hospital.

"At that time, he had already jumped out with his whole body outside. I rushed to him and just caught his arm. I put his arm under my body quickly and grasped his shoulder with my right hand and held on to him," said Dong.

The man tried to break free from Dong's grip, making several attempts to bite her arm. After the failed attempts, he then tried to bite the buttons of his coat to escape Dong's grip.

At 16:36:40, the man was pulled back. But Dong was exhausted and could not stand. On the second day, she couldn't feel anything in her swollen right arm after the incident, and was diagnosed with a nerve injury.

"I couldn't feel any strength in my right arm and couldn't raise it up nor pick up anything, not even a toothbrush," said Dong.

A doctor said Dong's recovery from the injury would take time, and that she would be monitored for the next three months. Surgery was not ruled out if she did not recover in that time.

Although her heroic act may leave its mark on her right arm, Dong told local media she did not regret her actions. Dong has been a nurse at the General Hospital of Fuxin Mining Industry Group for 12 years.

"I did not think at all. I just know that life is valuable. He's a human being. If I saw him jump off and did nothing, I would forever blame myself and feel guilty," she said.

The man was hospitalized at 13:00 that day for feeling dizzy. According to local media reports, the man had been under pressure after his wife passed away due to illness, leaving him to care for their disabled child.
