Storyline

Maritime departments across China welcomed the start of the Spring Festival travel rush on Monday, which marks China's largest seasonal migration of people as families reunite for the most important and traditional holiday.

China's Ministry of Transport has prepared over 20,000 passengers ships with over a million seats for passengers. During the travel rush period from Monday to March 1 this year, it is expected that 3 billion trips are to be made via China's transport system, as people set off for family gatherings and tours.

The ministry has also deployed several salvage ships and helicopters to patrol China's coastal waters to ensure travel safety at sea during the travel rush period.

In Yantai, a city in east China's Shandong Province, the local maritime transport department organized an inspection for its 46 passenger ships and fixed 287 issues.

In Xiamen, in east China's Fujian Province, as the number of travelers going to Taiwan by sea is expected to rise during the Spring Festival holiday, the local ministry has made special arrangements for the convenience of passengers.

"We've deployed most of our customs officers on duty and opened all of the automatic customs clearance gates to ensure clearance efficiency. Also, since many passengers will travel with large luggage during the travel rush period and there will be many families going to travel together during the Spring Festival travel rush, we'll set up fast lanes for those with special needs," said Dai Na, the deputy director of Tongyi frontier inspection station at the Xiamen Wutong passenger terminal.

In Haikou, the capital of south China's Hainan Province, the provincial marine bureau launched a joint inspection with related departments to all docked ships before the travel rush period.

Over 700 problems had been found and fixed and a total of 24 administrative penalty tickets were signed.
