A variety of festive, cultural activities were organized in Italy and Spain on Sunday to celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year, the most important holiday for Chinese people.
A lion dance and dragon dance parade took center stage Sunday afternoon in Milan, attracting a large number of spectators. The event was attended by Giuseppe Sala, the Mayor of Milan and Song Xuefeng, the Consul General of China in Milan.
"It's a wonderful event. Although it's raining, this place is colorful and there are many people around. It was really a nice show," said Costanza, a Milan resident.
"This is a festival and also a representation of a strong friendship between the city of Milan and the Chinese people living in Milan. I hope it will be a great year for everybody. I send my best regards and hope this year will be marked by a lot of economic and cultural cooperation," said Arianna Maria Censi, the vice-mayor of Milan.
Also on Sunday, a grand parade was staged in the streets of Usera, a Madrid district where most Chinese people live in. Several thousand Chinese and local residents in traditional Chinese costumes sang, danced and performed lion and dragon dances.
"It is the first time that I have come here and I really liked it. I think it is very interesting and pretty. I'm sure I will come again," said Lucia, a local resident.
"I'm an Italian living in Madrid. It's the second time I've come here. To say the truth, it is very good, and for sure I will come again. I like the international spirit of this festival," said David, another resident.
The event is part of the overseas 2019 Spring Festival celebrations. A fair, Chinese food festival and concert will also be held in Madrid, the capital city of Spain.
