The Chinese box office totaled 5.8 billion yuan (about 855 million U.S. dollars) in the seven days from the lunar new year eve, to the sixth day into the lunar new year.
That was more than the 5.75 billion yuan (about 847 million U.S. dollars) box office from the same period last year.
The just concluded Chinese New Year holiday was a time for travel, family reunions and watching movies.
Eight domestic films battled it out for box office supremacy during the week-long holiday, making this season the busiest in a year.
The first day of the holiday saw 1.5 billion yuan (about 220 million U.S. dollars) in box office revenues. That was a record for a single day box office.
The domestic film "The Wandering Earth" collected 2 billion yuan (about 295 million U.S. dollars) during the holiday.
