4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhong Shan, Chinese Minister of Commerce:
"Private companies have become a major force of our foreign trade. I say this because of two reasons. First is the share of private companies in foreign trade. Last year, foreign trade of private companies was 48 percent of the total. Second, foreign trade of private companies sees better quality."

7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhong Shan, Chinese Minister of Commerce (partially overlaid with shot 8):
"Generally speaking, China's trade is huge in scale, but not competitive enough. We will encourage exports of high-tech, high-quality and high-value-added products and improve our position in the global value chain. We will also encourage new trade businesses and models to develop new strength in foreign trade competition and to push forward China's shift from a big trading country to a strong one."

China's foreign trade saw expanding volume and better quality in 2018 despite global uncertainties, Chinese Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said Saturday on the sidelines of the country's annual legislative session.
Responding to a question about China's foreign trade at a press conference, Zhong said imports and exports of China reached 4.62 trillion U.S. dollars last year, a historical high. The increment was more than 510 billion U.S. dollars, almost the same as the total volume of the year of the 20th largest trading country in the world.
"Apart from expanded volume, what is more important is that the quality has improved. In particular, high-tech products increased fast last year, and exports of such products accounted for 30 percent of the total foreign trade. China's position as the first trading country has been consolidated, and the construction toward a strong trading country has sped up," Zhong said.
China will take a string of measures to maintain stable trade growth in 2019, the minister noted.
He said the commerce ministry will implement a raft of trade facilitation policies and measures in export credit insurance, financing and others to reduce burdens and improve efficiency for foreign trade companies.
Efforts will also be stepped up in improving the business environment to shore up enterprises' confidence, Zhong added.

Last year, foreign trade of private companies was 48 percent of the total. Second, foreign trade of private companies sees better quality," Zhong said.
China will promote international cooperation via the Belt and Road Initiative, and explore emerging trade markets while building on traditional ones, he said.

Imports will be expanded in scale and optimized in structure to meet domestic demands, according to him.
The ministry will support enterprises' innovation in technologies, systems and management to boost market competitiveness, Zhong added.
The press conference is held on the sidelines of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), China's highest organ of state power, opened on Tuesday. The session of the NPC is one of the commonly known annual "two sessions" in China, which focus on major national-level political and socioeconomic development issues.
