Storyline

Survivors of a catastrophic dam collapse in Brazil are struggling out of the fallouts, as life has to continue.

The accident occurred on Jan 25 when a tailings dam collapsed, pouring down a sea of toxic waste from an iron-ore mine and burying parts of the town of Brumadinho. The latest statistics show 209 died and 97 went missing in the disaster.

Ronam, a 14-year-old boy, was lucky to be the first survivor sent for medical treatment at that time. He was swimming when the dam collapsed.

"I only heard a huge sound and then mud was over me and pushed me high, and then I got lost in the forest," Ronam said.

Luckily, his brother found him four hours later.

"My brother was the the first person that came to look for me. It was great to see him! I thought I would be lost in the forest all my life," Ronam said.

His family were extremely happy to see him back, though they lost everything in the catastrophe.

"When he saw us and we met him, his mother was very happy, because she already thought he was lost, after missing for over four hours without any news. Then some cars arrived with his friends and classmates, and they were all very happy to see him," his father Ronaldo said.

Ronam has recovered from his rib injuries and returned to school, but the disaster has become a scar for him and his family whose farmland was completely destroyed in the torrent of reddish-brown mining waste. The family has tried best to avoid talking about it.

"I am afraid when the night comes. Every time when I get to sleep, my nightmare begins. I dream about death people. But I also dream of a neighboring dam collapse again, which is weird. To put it this way, I hope him (Ronam) can study hard and live a successful life, because we are getting older," Ronaldo said.

To help people like Ronaldo's family overcome the trauma, local hospitals and volunteers offer physical check and mental counseling. Vale, the dam's owner, promises to pay every adult 998 Brazilian reals (263 U.S. dollars) every month from Jan 25 and the payment process is underway.

Ronaldo said Vale's employees reassured him that they will get compensation, and all they can do now is wait.
