Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Italy shows mutual respect and stable ties between the two countries, said Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Tuesday.

Italy and China, as two great civilizations and cultural powers, have seen a wide range of exchanges since ancient times, Mattarella told China Central Television. He said 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Italy and China, and President Xi’s visit will shed light on the future direction of bilateral relations.

"I am really delighted to have this opportunity to reciprocate President Xi's extraordinary reception that he reserved for me back in 2017. President Xi will visit Rome and Palermo, and will meet with Italy's highest-ranking officials. This shows that our relationship is stable and built on mutual respect," said Mattarella.

He added that a series of meetings and conferences on culture, economy and trade will be held during the visit, which will boost closer relationship between the two.

Italy and the wider Europe should be committed to opening dialogue with China, and jointly promote openness, win-win cooperation and multilateralism, according to Mattarella.

"Economic and trade relationship are the cornerstone of Sino-Italian ties. Continuous growth of bilateral trade, and cooperation and investment between companies in our two countries have showed our confidence in developing bilateral ties. For a long time, Italy has not just seen China as one of its most important trade partners, but also as an engine of international trade. Italy sticks to a real, open, multilateral trade system," he said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay state visits to Italy, Monaco and France from March 21 to 26, to consolidate time-honored friendship, enhance practical cooperation and champion multilateralism.

The Europe tour, Xi's first overseas trip this year, is expected to inject fresh impetus to the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership and create new opportunities to boost global stability and prosperity.
