China urges the United States to lift its sanctions against Cuba as soon as possible, said a foreign ministry spokesman at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.
Lu Kang, the spokesman, made the statement when asked about China's stance on a new round of U.S. sanctions against Cuba.
"China always opposes the wrong practices of unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction based on a country's domestic laws outside the framework of the UN Security Council. The United States has long been imposing sanctions against Cuba, severely harming Cuba's economic and social development and the lives of its people. As is known to all, the UN General Assembly has repeatedly passed resolutions, demanding the United States end such wrong practice," said Lu.

The U.S. government on Wednesday stepped up its trade sanctions against Cuba by activating Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which would allow U.S. citizens to establish lawsuits against foreign companies operating in Cuba over properties nationalized or confiscated after 1959.
