Storyline

A warship from Singapore sailed into the Chinese port of Qingdao on Friday for the international fleet review to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy scheduled for next week.

The frigate Stalwart is the first foreign naval vessel to arrive for the four-day commemorative event which is to start on Monday, featuring maritime parades, high-level seminars, warship visits and other cultural and sports exchanges.

The international fleet review is a tradition and common practice for naval exchanges and also an opportunity for the Chinese navy to extend courtesy to its counterparts.

A brief ceremony was held to welcome the Stalwart and its crew. The formidable-class frigate was in China last year during the China-ASEAN maritime exercise off the coast of Zhanjiang City in south China's Guangdong Province.

"The journey has been good. It's my first time to Qingdao. Happy to be here... Looking forward to the fleet review," said Lieutenant-Colonel Aaron Li Jun Hong, captain of RSS Stalwart of the Singaporean Navy.

Navy delegations from more than 60 countries and vessels from more than 10 countries were invited to participate in the Qingdao celebration of the Chinese navy's founding anniversary.

The Port of Qingdao is home of the PLA North Sea Fleet. There's a festive atmosphere, amid preparations for the navy's 70th birthday.

The international fleet review is a signal that the Chinese navy and China are open friendly to the whole world, said Zhang Junshe, a senior researcher of the Research Institute of the PLA Navy.

It will be the second international fleet review put up in China in ten years.
