Storyline

A search and rescue operation is underway to free the more than 30 people trapped in a collapsed supermarket in Pampanga province, after a deadly earthquake struck the Philippines' main island of Luzon on Monday.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake has killed at least nine people. Four bodies have already been retrieved from the collapsed supermarket in Porac town, Pampanga province, the most seriously affected area of the quake, while rescue work continues for the 31 customers and employees still trapped in the building.

"We've found out that we have 31 individuals who were trapped here, including the employees and the customers. And then, there are six who were rescued and transported to the hospital," said Francis Calgagan, information officer of the Disaster Mitigation and Management Office of Pampanga province.

The number of casualties is expected to rise as reports pour in from the affected provinces. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency in Porac town.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered an immediate assessment of areas affected by the earthquake.

The quake knocked down buildings and walls, and cracked road surfaces in Pampanga province and other parts of central Luzon. A number of churches, including a century-old Roman Catholic church, were also damaged.

High-rise building in Manila, the country's capital, shook at the force of the quake, prompting employees to dash out of their offices.

Public schools and government offices in Manila and outlying provinces were closed on Tuesday to allow for the buildings to be inspected.

The Philippines, which lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, has numerous active faults and trenches on both sides of the archipelago.

The geographic and geologic settings of the Philippines make the country prone to earthquakes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology records an average of 20 earthquakes a day and 100 to 150 earthquakes are felt per year.
