"This forum has enabled us to learn more about the BRI and also the definition. Initially, we thought in Malaysia that it is all about the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea and the Silk Road. But now it is obvious that it embraces a big chunk of the world, even extending to Latin America and Africa. So it is really a world movement designed to improve relations between countries, connectivity as well as the development of infrastructure, especially in the poorer countries. So it is much bigger than what we though initially. And I think everybody welcomes that. It is designed to improve communication between countries and between East and West. And as usual when you have increasing trade between East and West, then Malaysia which is at a very strategic location, would benefit because of the passage of more ships traveling between East and West, and invariably our ports will grow because of the increasing world trade."

"What I like about the BRI is that all the countries are working together to define it -- what is BRI about. What we used to see was that some ideas come out from some very powerful countries. They come from one source and the rest of the world must follow. But here we are together, we are defining things among us and even the smallest countries with small population of less than a million can speak in the forum where countries with 1.4 billion people also participate. So this is really, truly democratic. And it is a proper way to make decisions, to form things, and to solve problems within nations."

Storyline

Everybody will welcome the Belt and Road Initiative as it embraces truly democratic spirit and is designed to improve connectivity between countries and develop their infrastructure, said Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in an interview with China Central Television on Sunday in Beijing.

Mahathir came to Beijing for the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) held from April 25 to 27.

The prime minister said he is glad to be in Beijing to discuss the Belt and Road Initiative together with other countries, which will help the world to better understand it when many still have misunderstandings about it.

As one of the first countries that responded to the initiative, Mahathir said even Malaysia did not get the whole idea of it in the very beginning, considering it as "all about the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea and the Silk Road."

But now it is obvious to Malaysia that the initiative embraces a big chunk of the world, even extending to Latin America and Africa.

"So it is really a world movement designed to improve relations between countries, connectivity as well as the development of infrastructure, especially in the poorer countries. So it is much bigger than what we though initially. And I think everybody welcomes that," said Mahathir.

After getting to know what the initiative is all about, Mahathir said he realized that Malaysia will definitely benefit from it.

"And as usual when you have increasing trade between East and West, then Malaysia which is at a very strategic location, would benefit because of the passage of more ships traveling between East and West, and invariably our ports will grow because of the increasing world trade," said Mahathir.

In the keynote speech at the second BRF, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the Belt and Road Initiative upholds the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, which was highly appreciated by Mahathir.

And it is a proper way to make decisions, to form things, and to solve problems within nations," said Mahathir.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Mahathir said China is taking a lead in many areas in the world.

"In fact in certain areas, perhaps China is ahead of many of the rest of the developed world. It is going to be a very influential nation in the world and it has the strength to attract the participation of the rest of the world in terms of China's ideas about how to spread its wealth all over the world," said Mahathir.
