Storyline

China's rescue vessel Haiyangdao and the Russian rescue ship Belousov conducted a submarine rescue drill at the Yellow Sea on Thursday, the second day of the China-Russia "Joint Sea-2019" exercise.

The drill started at 06:40, when a Russian submarine was reportedly damaged, and had sunk to the bottom of the sea.

The Chinese Haiyangdao quickly arrived at the site, and released sonars from both sides of the ship to comb the waves for the wrecked submarine. After 30 minutes of searching, sonar operators found their rescue target.

By 09:20, Haiyangdao finished preparation work, started the dynamic positioning system, and set up a rescue operation field near the Russian submarine within minutes.

The ship then sent its deep submergence rescue vessel into the ocean, and located the target within 20 minutes. After about ten minutes of docking and water draining, the Russian crew aboard the submarine climbed out to safety.

"After docking with the wrecked submarine, the deep submergence rescue vessel needs to drain water, send a knocking signal and set up a transfer channel. It is a very complicated process and requires high accuracy so that the submarine would be safe," said Yu Chao, the political commissar of Haiyangdao Ship.

On Thursday afternoon, the two teams switched their roles, and the Chinese expert team reached the Russian rescue ship Belousov to help them rescue a Chinese submarine.

"I think today's submarine aid and rescue drill was a great success. I believe that is is a distinctive sign of the deep mutual trust between Chinese and Russian navies.," said Du Changyu, the commander of China's submarine aid and rescue team.
