Storyline

The Beijing Daxing International Airport, a new airport under construction, started its first test flights on Monday, with a plane of China Southern Airlines landing on a western runway.

The Airbus A380 of China Southern Airlines was the first plane to go through the test.

Along with the aircraft, a Boeing 747, an Airbus A350 and a Boeing 787 respectively dispatched by Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines also took part in the test flights at the new airport, which will lay a solid foundation for operations at the new airport.

"The test flights are a prerequisite for project acceptance in the civil aviation and usage permission of a civil airport, and they are an important test to the flight procedures and the ground operation procedures," said Zhu Wenxin, deputy general manager of the Beijing Daxing International Airport.

The tests are divided into three phrases, with the first phrase carried out on Monday to test the airport’s general support capacity. The second phase will be conducted in this August to test its visibility, and the third phrase will be held in August and September.

"The flight area has entered into the project acceptance phrase. The terminal building will complete its acceptance-related work at the end of June. And related municipal works are beginning to take shape," said Zhu.

The new airport is a large international airport. Located on the border between southern Beijing's Daxing District and Langfang, a city in neighboring Hebei Province, the new airport is expected to handle 72 million passengers, 2 million tons of goods and 620,000 flights annually by 2025.

The new airport's omnidirectional runway configuration, including three parallel runways and a side runway, was officially unveiled May 8. The airport's flight efficiency level will be among the best in the world.

The construction of the airport is expected to be completed by June 30, 2019, and will be put into operation before Sept. 30.
