Lebanon's new role as an observer in talks on the Syria crisis is of great significance for the country to maintain stability and improve its environment for economic development, said a Lebanese political analyst on Saturday.
The 12th International Conference on Syria, formerly known as Astana Talks, wrapped up on April 26 in Nursultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, with all parties granting Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan observer status for the next round of Syria talks slated for July this year.
Sami Nader, a Lebanese political analyst, said in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) that participating in the peace talks as an observer is an important step for Lebanon to restore trade ties with Syria, which have been seriously affected by the crisis.
"By participating in the peace talks, the representatives of Lebanon and Syria sit at the same conference table again. This is the first step in the normalization of relations between the two countries," said Nader.
Nader also stressed that as Syria’s neighboring country, Lebanon plays a significant role in security issues.
"Lebanon can play a crucial role in refugee issues, in regional security and in combating terrorism. These are all issues related to security. After all, achieving regional security and peace is one of the important goals of the peace talks," said Nader.
Nader added that in the past three years, the situation in Syria has further developed in a favorable direction for the Syrian government and many Arab countries have begun to consider how to face the post-war problems in Syria. Therefore the participation of more countries in Syria's peace process is of great significance to the region's stability in a "post-crisis era".
