Xi also said that China has been making efforts to ensure its Belt and Road Initiative will work in synergy with the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in order to create more opportunities for other developing countries.

In addition, he said China is willing to share its scientific and technological achievements, including 5G technology with other countries.

"China is willing to share the latest scientific and technological achievements with other countries, including 5G technology, and to work together with other countries to cultivate our new core competences, and transform our economic development models," Xi told the forum.

Speaking earlier at the plenary session, Russia's President Vladimir Putin said the existing model of global economic relations is now in crisis, and some countries have switched from the free market to trade wars and protection.

President Xi arrived in St. Petersburg on Thursday to attend the SPIEF after holding talks with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

Xi's visit to Russia, the eighth since 2013 when he was elected as Chinese president, comes as the two countries mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.
