Storyline


Continuous heavy rainfall since last week has caused floods that inundated over 55,000 hectares of croplands in Ji'an City of east China's Jiangxi Province.

According to latest data from the Ji'an City Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, the area of croplands damaged by flood in the city has reached 55,700 hectares.

"It rained too heavily these days, all my 300 mu (20 hectares) of early season rice have been flooded. They will all be destroyed if the flooding continues," said local farmer Qiu Rifu of Furong Village.

A river overflowed in Ji'an's Hengjiang Town on Monday due to the flood, causing serious damage to local farmlands. More than 100 local people and government officials used sandbags to block the river water. At present, the danger has been brought under control.

"We organized villagers and rescue teams to fight the flood as soon as we found the river was overflowing on Monday afternoon," said Zhou Zhaocan, a local village official.

According to preliminary statistics, as of 15:00 local time (0700 GMT) on Monday, the flood disaster has affected the life of 1.562 million people in Jiangxi Province.

The China National Commission for Disaster Reduction has sent a working group to the disaster areas to guide the relief work.
