China encourages civilian and military technology integration via the ongoing China Innovation Challenge Competition.

This year the competition will last for about six months to solicit from the public in different cities practical technological solutions to meet the needs of the armed forces.

More than 150 technological needs will be released to the public in three or four rounds and the winners list will be announced in this December after careful evaluation.

The first round of 82 needs had been publicized, involving nine areas such as new energy and power units, artificial intelligence and automated operation systems.

"We mainly want to reach two goals through this competition. First, setting up a platform to pool resources from all areas so as to achieve a polymerization effect. Second, we want to dig out real deep and come up with some cutting-edge and unprecedented scientific achievements," said Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Military and Civil Integration and Innovation Department of the Zhongguancun Management Committee.

The competition has attracted companies, research institutes and universities from 25 provinces, cities and autonomous regions to sign up.
