During the period in Menaka, we not only need to fulfill the tasks appointed by MINUSMA, but we also need to protect the personal safety of our peacekeepers. Storyline

The seventh batch of the Chinese peacekeeping force in Mali recently deployed four detachments of 38 Chinese peacekeepers to Menaka, east Mali to carry out engineering tasks.

At the request of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the 38 Chinese peacekeepers will spend 10 months in Menaka building security facilities and board rooms in Super Camp.

As terror attacks occur frequently in Menaka, with the roads in poor condition, all the four detachments and supplies will travel by air.

Menaka is one of the most dangerous place in Mali, whose administration center is still controlled by anti-government armed forces. This year alone, there have been 38 terror attacks in Menaka.

The infrastructure in Menaka is dated and in need of upgrades. Arriving at the deployment zone, the engineering detachments commenced early-stage tasks such as improving the peripheral defense blindages, building a monitoring network, formulating defense plans and organized simulation drills.

"We should make sure that when facing emergency, every peacekeeper can remember how to avoid danger, know battle position clearly, and be familiar with the process of handling emergency situation. During the period in Menaka, we not only need to fulfill the tasks appointed by MINUSMA, but we also need to protect the personal safety of our peacekeepers. We should ensure our peacekeepers finish the tasks safely and in high quality," said Dong Xingyi, deputy battalion chief of engineering detachment under the seventh batch of the Chinese peacekeeping force.
