"Luxembourg, as one of the European countries, plays such an important role in the foundation and the setting up of the AIIB, and in the running of the AIIB today, so it is a very good opportunity for us to explain to all of our shareholders the big progress that the AIIB has made in our first three and a half years, the many projects, the growing membership, the increased focus on climate change and connectivity, and investments that we have. That is what we expect to happen in this annual meeting this week in Luxembourg."

"We will continue to grow our membership to expand our projects. The theme of this annual meeting is cooperation and connectivity, precisely to discuss the importance of Europe and Asia working together, the AIIB provides a forum for that. Also here in Luxembourg, we have the European Investment Bank which is an important partner for the AIIB. So by being here in Luxembourg, we can also strengthen that partnership, and work together in the future between the two institutions to invest in projects which promote connectivity and which help to fight climate change. I think those are things that will be great benefits from having this annual meeting here in Luxembourg this week."

"Well of course China is a major economy in the world these days, contributing through trade and its own economic growth. I think also China having been a recipient for many years of support from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to help support China's development, now which is also to share some of that experience with the rest of the world. China promoted the establishment of the AIIB, but the AIIB is a multilateral institution. Now we answer to all of our member countries, it is not a Chinese bank, it is an international institution, but through setting up the AIIB, China is also playing a role in enhancing further multilateral cooperation, just so important for the countries of this world to work together to solve their common economic and environmental challenges."

Storyline

The annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Luxembourg, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will focus on how to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe, said the institution's Vice President Danny Alexander.

Luxembourg, a small country in northwestern Europe, is the first European country to host an AIIB annual meeting and was also the first non-Asian country to become a member of the AIIB.

According to Alexander, Luxembourg is the ideal place for the institution's first annual meeting in Europe because it is a center of global financing and innovation.

That is what we expect to happen in this annual meeting this week in Luxembourg," said Alexander.

This edition of the annual meeting is expected to be attended by over 1,500 representatives and will focus on sustainable infrastructure investment and cooperation, with enhancing connectivity between Asia and Europe high on the list of major topics.

I think those are things that will be great benefits from having this annual meeting here in Luxembourg this week," said Alexander.

Since its launch in January 2016, the AIIB has participated in the construction of 40 projects worth over eight billion U.S. dollars.

Alexander said these projects have facilitated connectivity between countries and attracted more private investment in Asian infrastructure construction.

He said in addition to benefiting countries' economic growth, the AIIB also plays an important role in fulfilling promises under the Paris Agreement on climate change and tackling climate change.

Now we answer to all of our member countries, it is not a Chinese bank, it is an international institution, but through setting up the AIIB, China is also playing a role in enhancing further multilateral cooperation, just so important for the countries of this world to work together to solve their common economic and environmental challenges," said Alexander.
