Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. What do you want to restore in such a place as Hong Kong? Where will Hong Kong be restored to? So, we can see clearly their political motives from the slogan -- they are against the 'one country, two systems' principle and challenging China's sovereignty over Hong Kong."

Storyline

China's central government on Tuesday strongly condemned escalated violence in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), saying that those radicals shall be brought to justice eventually.

Yang Guang, spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, made the condemnation at a press conference held in Beijing during which he first briefed the press about the violent deeds conduced by radicals recently and their impacts on the society.

According to Yang, in the last two months, demonstrations in Hong Kong SAR have gone beyond the freedom of assembly, procession and demonstration and escalated to extreme violence.

Radicals have assaulted police officers and committed arson and vandalism, among other serious violations of the law, Yang said, adding that some people even advocated attacking police officers using lethal means online.

"Some people chanted the slogan 'restoration of Hong Kong; revolution of our times'. I want to ask them 'what kind of place do you think Hong Kong is?' Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. What do you want to restore in such a place as Hong Kong? Where will Hong Kong be restored to? So, we can see clearly their political motives from the slogan -- they are against the 'one country, two systems' principle and challenging China's sovereignty over Hong Kong," said Yang.

The spokesman said that the mission for Hong Kong residents now is urgent and clear -- to "stop violence and restore order".

"The central government's support to Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is firm and unswerving. The opposition's scheme of forcing Carrie Lam to resign is doomed to fail! Once again, I would like to pay tribute to the Hong Kong police force for their resolute and strict enforcement of the law. The whole nation is behind you," said Yang.

So far, a total of 461 people have been injured in the violence, including 139 police officers. What is even more outrageous and alarming is that some radicals tore up the Basic Law (of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China) and stained the national emblem, Yang said.

Some unscrupulous radicals removed the Chinese national flag from a flagpole near Tsim Sha Tsui and later flung it into the sea on Saturday, Yang said, adding that such behaviors are a grave violation of the law, a flagrant violation of national dignity and a challenge to the bottom line of the "one country, two systems" principle.

Hong Kong's transport network was partially paralyzed on Monday as radicals launched strikes the same day. As a result, about 250 flights were canceled; services of a total of eight subway lines were suspended and multiple roads and streets were blocked.

Radicals once again removed the Chinese national flag from a flagpole near Tsim Sha Tsui and later flung it into the sea later that day.

These mobs are extremely unscrupulous and insolent, Yang said, and what awaits them will be severe punishment in accordance with the law and the inerasable mark on the column of shame, he added.

"Don't ever misjudge the situation and mistake our restraint for weakness," Yang warned the criminals.

Never underestimate Hong Kong's strong force of justice in upholding the rule of law and maintaining stability; never underestimate the firm determination and power of the central government and the people of the whole country to safeguard Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and the fundamental interests of the country, Yang said.

"We also want to warn those few unscrupulous violent criminals and the black hands behind them, those who play with fire will be burnt by it and the deserved punishment will come in a due course! All those who have engaged in violent criminal activities, no matter who they are, shall be held legally accountable, including those who masterminded, organized and directed violent criminal activities!" said Yang.
