Storyline

Climate change is a key issue affecting not only the implementation of the UN's 2030 agenda but also one which threatens the very survival of humanity if not properly addressed, according to a senior United Nations official.

Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, made the remarks during a recent interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in New York City, where the United Nations General Assembly is currently in session.

The 74th session of the UN General Assembly kicked off on Tuesday, while the first day of the high-level General Debate is scheduled to open next Tuesday. During the week of debate, several other high-level events will also take place, including a summit on climate action and the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals.

While a series of major climate change protests were held around the world on Friday, Liu acknowledged the issue is a very serious topic not only in achieving the UN's 2030 agenda for sustainable development and eradicating poverty, but also one which impacts the survival of the human race.

"Climate Change is very critical for implementing the 2030 agenda, and also for to ensure the survival of humankind. Almost all member states made their contribution, but implementation is not very good. The recent IPCC report reveals that if the international community does not take further and ambitious actions in the coming decade, then it will be difficult to maintain the temperature rise below 1.5 degrees centigrade," said Liu.

Despite the setback of the U.S. withdrawing from the landmark Paris Agreement two years ago, Liu said he is still confident about mobilizing the rest of the world to be more ambitious in dealing with the threat of climate change amid the forecasted downward pressure on global economic growth.

"I think one of the issues that has been created by the announced withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement, and also the lack of ambition of other member states. On September 23, Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres) is going to convene his climate action summit. This summit intended to mobilize international support, and to raise ambition for further mitigation measures. So this is the moment for the international community to reach consensus that they really need to take action in the coming decade," said Liu.

Liu added that China has played a significant role in the global fight against climate change and achieving sustainable development, saying the country has made great contributions to the Paris Agreement and set a fine example to others.

"China's role has been very critical as well as very positive. So in Paris, China really contributed a lot in reaching the Paris Agreement. And over the past four years, China really delivered very well. China has set one of the good examples for the world that the energy transition is possible. So the economic transition also is possible. For the United Nations, I think we're quite confident that countries like China, and some European, even some other emerging economies, I think they're doing very well towards that end," said Liu.
