China and the Solomon Islands have agreed to establish diplomatic ties with the signing of a joint communique during a ceremony held Saturday in Beijing after the Pacific nation cut ties with Taiwan.

The Solomon Islands has now made its stance clear on the one-China policy after it severed so-called diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

"The government of the Solomon Islands has made a decision to sever ties with Taiwan. We therefore recognize the one-China policy," said Jeremiah Manele, the foreign minister of the Solomon Islands.

The decision was welcomed in China, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hailing the "visionary" move.

"The Taiwan region was, is and will continue to be an inalienable part of China's territory. This status will not and cannot be changed. Now, there are only a handful of countries who have not yet established diplomatic relations with China. We believe more and more visionary people in these countries will speak up for justice in keeping with the overriding trend of the times," said Wang.

Beijing says it will develop friendly relations with the Solomon Islands based on mutual respect and equality. So far, China has established official diplomatic relationships with 179 countries around the world.

The Solomon Islands is the sixth country to cut official ties with Taiwan since Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016. It means the number of Taiwan's remaining allies has dropped down to 15.
