Storyline


Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in Beijing on Tuesday, with both sides pledging to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

Khan is in Beijing to attend the closing ceremony of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing and pay a working visit to China.

"China firmly supports Pakistan's legitimate rights to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China also supports Pakistan's drive for national revitalization and development to prosperity," Li said in reaffirming mutual support between China and Pakistan during the meeting with the Pakistani side.

For his part, Khan extended congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1. He also thanked China for the assistance and support it has provided to Pakistan.

"I thought I would start by thanking China for being an all-weather friend. All-weather friend means a friend in need. You know your friends in difficult times. And China yet again stood with us. On behalf of my country, I want to thank you," he said.

The two sides also agreed to push forward with development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The corridor is a flagship project that includes energy and infrastructure which was officially launched in 2013 under initiative on the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (Belt and Road Initiative).

"Based on the existing Gwadar port and other projects, the two sides will focus on the expansion of CPEC development such as industrial parks, with preferences given to fields involving the people's livelihood, and extend the corridor to the western areas of Pakistan," said Luo Zhaohui, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, during the meeting.

After the talks, the two prime ministers attended a signing ceremony for a series of bilateral cooperation agreements including infrastructure construction, law enforcement and security, culture, education and media.

Prior to the talks, Li held a welcome ceremony for his Pakistani counterpart outside the Great Hall of the People.

Imran Khan also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
