Storyline

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) said on Monday that it had filed a lawsuit against the Boeing Company, saying that the grounding of the 737 MAX aircraft has caused over 100 million U.S. dollars in lost wages for pilots.

The union, which filed its suit in federal court in the District Court of Dallas County, Texas, condemned in its statement that Boeing "abandoned sound design and engineering practices, withheld safety critical information from regulators and deliberately misled its customers, pilots and the public about the true scope of design changes to the 737 MAX" for market competition.

The union said it agreed to fly the Max because Boeing said "it was airworthy and essentially the same as the time-tested 737 aircraft that its pilots have flown for years," the union said in a release. "These representations were false."

Southwest Airlines is a major operator of Boeing 737 Max aircraft in the United States.

Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which caused fatal air disasters in five months, have been grounded in many countries across the world since March.

An Ethiopian Airlines plane en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya, crashed on March 10, 2019, killing all 157 people aboard. A Lion Air crash in on Oct 29, 2018 in Indonesia killed all 189 people on board. Both were Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft and circumstances surrounding both crashes shared alarming similarities.
