Storyline

China's polar icebreaker Xuelong 2 has made all-round preparations for its first Antarctic expedition to begin on Oct. 15 in close cooperation with Xuelong 1 to better fulfill research missions.

In the extremely cold polar areas, human bodies are prone to stress reactions including hormone levels, metabolism, and immune function. In order to better ensure the health of crew members, Xuelong 2 is equipped with larger number of medical equipment, and the medical doctors in the expedition team have trained in 12 departments to improve their general treatment ability.

"[We have learned] knowledge concerning internal medicine, surgery, first aid and CPR, which is very comprehensive. Our team members have no aid when fighting out there alone, but fortunately we have the remote diagnosis system," said Hao Junjie, a member of China National Emergency Rescue Team.

Xuelong 2 arrived at Shenzhen City, south China's Guangdong Province, on Wednesday for the 2019 China Marine Economy Expo and will leave for Antarctic on Oct. 15. On Wednesday, expedition team members also bid farewell to their family on dock.

"It is a holy mission, and I am very happy to be a member on the new ship. But it is also hard to part with my family," said Zhang Xude, chief officer of Xuelong 2.

Xuelong 2 will cooperate with its senior Xuelong 1 to jointly carry out China's 36th Antarctic expedition mission. Built in 1993 in Ukraine, Xuelong 1 has supported China's annual expeditions to Antarctica for more than 20 years.

"[Xuelong 1 and 2] will cooperate at Zhongshan and Changcheng stations, and break the ice together. Xuelong 1 focuses more on the construction of stations, supplement and Antarctic researches. As far as I know, Xuelong 2 focuses more on researches on the ocean," said crew member Chen Xiangming.
