Twenty-six people have died, 18 missing and over 170 people injured as of 19:00, Sunday local time as Typhoon Hagibis ripped through Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, with many rivers overflowing into residential areas across a wide area of the country.
Heavy floods were witnessed on the section of Setagaya Ward of the Tamagawa river which passes through Tokyo, and caused the Setagaya Memorial Hospital severely inundated.
"The flood poured into the ground floor of the hospital, and submerged the service counter, reaching up to the height of people's chest," said a staff member with the hospital.
Most floods had receded as of Sunday morning. The hospital's workers as well as families of the patients joined in clearing the mud and water logging away from the hospital.
Once the job is done, patients here would be evacuated to other hospitals.
"The biggest problem is that the dinning hall (located at the ground floor) was submerged so patients have nothing to eat," said another worker with the hospital.
Staff members of Setagaya Memorial Hospital, families of the patients, as well as members of Japan's Self-Defense Force (SDF) have all joined with the evacuation of the more than 160 patients, which is expected to complete within Sunday.
The typhoon, the 19th and likely most powerful of the season, made its landfall on the Izu Peninsula on Japan's main island at 19:00 Saturday local time.
Typhoon Hagibis, meaning "swift" in the Philippine language Tagalog, could possibly bring rainfall amounts not seen since a deadly typhoon in 1958, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
