Storyline

The first batch of flag-raising ceremonies of the 7th Military World Games were held at the event's Athletes' Village in central China's Wuhan City on Tuesday to welcome the first group of delegates who had just arrived.

The national flags of Algeria, Germany, France, Guyana, and Norway were raised at Tuesday's ceremonies.

Participating countries are bringing their very best sportsmen and women from the army, navy, air forces and military police to compete for medals at the Games.

"We bring with us 402 guys with very good athletes so our expectations are high. In fact, as you know, China is receiving us so we expect to make friends with China and all the other 108 countries participating in this 7th games," said Bertrand Gebuhrer, chief of the French delegation.

The Wuhan Games will play host to 10,000 athletes, coaches, medical personnel, and officials from over 100 countries.

Athletes who have arrived said they will use the next couple of days to acclimatise to the time difference, climate and culture as they eagerly wait for the Games to open on Oct. 18.

They added they are here to compete, but above all, they are also looking forward to make new friends and learn from other nations.

"First time in China. My expectations - that those games are fair for everyone and we can have friendship through sports, and I get to know other nations, their performances, how good they are and learn more about their culture, " said Anne Richter, a German Marathon athlete.

"For everybody taking part in the games, it's a competition - fighting at each other but after that they come together, speak, have fun, laughing together and that's the most important thing," said Marcus Abramowski, Germany's boxing team captain.

Flag-raising ceremonies will continue to be held over the next two days as other international delegations arrive.

By the time the Games begin, there will be more than a hundred flags, including China's, at the square in the Athletes' Village.

Aside from regular sports, the Games will also feature categories with military characteristics like the Aeronautical pentathlon, Military pentathlon, and Naval pentathlon.
