Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping had a video conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday afternoon, as the two heads of state jointly witnessed the launching ceremony of the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline.

Xi first greeted Putin via video, then extended his congratulations on the operation of the pipeline and appreciations to the pipeline builders of the two countries.

Xi pointed out that the new pipeline is a landmark energy project that may well serve as a model of win-win cooperation between China and Russia. He added that the commencement of operation marks not only major initial achievement, but also a new starting point for cooperation.

The two sides, Xi said, should build safe, green and friendship pipelines, make every effort to ensure that pipeline construction and operation are safe and reliable, and promote sustainable economic and social development in the areas along the pipeline.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic ties. Xi said China and Russia are in a critical period of national development at present, while their bilateral ties have entered a new era. Xi said he hopes the two sides will make persistent efforts to launch more key projects, such as east-route natural gas pipeline, so as to boost the development of the two countries and benefit the two countries as well as their peoples.

For his part, Putin said the operation of pipeline is of great historic significance and will bring the strategic cooperation between the two countries to a new height at the time of 70th anniversary of Russia-China diplomatic ties. He said Russia is willing to work with China to ensure the implementation of this landmark strategic cooperation project.

The two heads of state then gave orders for the start of the pipeline's operation.

The China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline is set to deliver natural gas from Russia's Siberia to northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, with its annual capacity expected to reach 5 billion cubic meters in 2020 and increase to 38 billion cubic meters from 2024, under a 30-year contract signed between the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Russian gas giant Gazprom in May 2014.

The cross-border gas pipeline has a 3,000-km section in Russia and a 5,111-km stretch in China.
