"I saw the video recording myself. I was shocked in seeing that happen again and again in Hong Kong. Actually one of my relatives was also a victim a few weeks ago and he has to undergo eye surgery, nose surgery. It all goes back to law abiding. You might have a different opinion but if other people decided that the obstructions on the road have been causing so many inconvenience and decided to clear the street with his own bare hands, attacks of this nature can not be accepted. It could be fatal as you suggest. If they see road blockade or any illegal activities, call the police. Let the law enforcement agencies deal with the situation. I thank all Hong Kong citizens who want to help the police and the government, but their own safety must be taken care of."

Storyline

Tang King-shing, former commissioner of the Hong Kong Police Force, urged the newly elected district council members to competently perform their duties and promote the well-being of the special administrative region (SAR).

The former police chief made the statements during an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Monday, one week after opposition candidates gained majority seats in the SAR's district council elections.

When asked about the future relations between the newly elected district councilors and the city's police, Tang said that to protect and promote the fundamental interests of Hong Kong residents is one of the top priorities for the district council members.

"The newly-elected district councilors should fully understand, appreciate the role and responsibilities of the district council, so that they can properly and competently perform their duties, to promote the well-being of their respective district," he said.

Over the past five months, rioters and foreign forces have worked hand in hand to incite and escalate violence in Hong Hong, sowing social and political antagonism in the city, tearing the society apart, and undermining Hong Kong's economy and people's livelihood.

On Sunday, a resident was attacked in the head when he was voluntarily trying to clear the road barricades. Though victim of violence survived, the assault could have been fatal.

Noting that different views are fine, the former police commissioner condemned such extreme and illegal attacks that happened repeatedly in the city.

It could be fatal as you suggest," Tang said.

He also suggested that the Hong Kong residents can turn to authorities for help when they encounter riots.

"If they see road blockade or any illegal activities, call the police. Let the law enforcement agencies deal with the situation. I thank all Hong Kong citizens who want to help the police and the government, but their own safety must be taken care of,"the ex police chief said.

Chris Tang Ping-keung, the SAR's new police commissioner sworn in on Nov 19, has changed the slogan of Hong Kong Police Force to "Serving Hong Kong with honor, duty and loyalty" from the previous "We serve with pride and care", which indicated that the attitude of the police has always kept up with the changing circumstances of the society.

"We make regular review to ensure that the entire force is moving towards the right direction according to changes within the society, changes in circumstances around Hong Kong, and changes in our motherland, in order to ensure the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong," Tang King-shing told CGTN reporter.
