"We have noticed the relevant reports. The establishment of INSTEX with Iran is an important effort made by the EU to safeguard the Iranian nuclear issue and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It also reflects the EU determination to uphold multilateralism and the international order based on international law. China highly appreciates this. We welcome the decision of the six European countries to support the trade settlement and the continuous progress in the establishment of the mechanism, which will help promote the cooperation between the EU and Iran and ensure the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. We hope this payment mechanism for trade will play its full role, help expand its scope of business coverage as soon as possible and open to third parties outside the EU so as to contribute to the normal economic and trade cooperation between the international community and Iran."

Storyline

China highly appreciates the decision of six European countries to join the European Union(EU)-initiated payment channel with Iran, and hopes the move will facilitate trade cooperation between the international community and Iran, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Tuesday.

The six countries are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, which released a joint statement on Monday, announcing to join the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX).

We welcome the decision of the six European countries to support the trade settlement and the continuous progress in the establishment of the mechanism, which will help promote the cooperation between the EU and Iran and ensure the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.," said Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman.

We hope this payment mechanism for trade will play its full role, help expand its scope of business coverage as soon as possible and open to third parties outside the EU so as to contribute to the normal economic and trade cooperation between the international community and Iran," Hua added.

The INSTEX payment channel with Iran intends to facilitate trade with Iran and skirt U.S. anti-Iran sanctions after Washington pulled out of the 2015 landmark the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018. Washington has warned EU nations against such actions.

The European side intends to use the channel initially only to sell food, medicine and medical devices in Iran. However, it will be possible to expand the coverage of the channel in the future.
