A symposium marking the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Basic Law was held Tuesday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China's top legislator Li Zhanshu spoke at the symposium and called for efforts to uphold and improve "one country, two systems" principle.
Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said the successful practice of "one country, two systems" with Macao's characteristics should be promoted in accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.
He pointed out that the Constitution and the Basic Law of Macao SAR serve as the constitutional basis of Macao SAR, and the Macao SAR Basic Law, based on the Constitution and conforms to the actual situation of Macao, is an excellent law that can stand up to the test of practice.
Li stressed that upholding the principle of "one country, two systems", maintaining the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, and promoting China's peaceful reunification are the obvious advantages of China's state institution and governance system.
He gave four advices on effectively implementing the Macao Basic Law: enforcing governance strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law; exercising the central government's overall jurisdiction over Macao and maintaining Macao's high degree of autonomy according to the law; continuing to establish a mechanism that can safeguard national security and prevent external intervention in the affairs of Macao; further promoting the Constitution and Macao Basic Law.
Vice Premier Han Zheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee also attended the symposium.
