Storyline

China is committed to promoting South-South cooperation on climate change, said a Chinese representative at a High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday.

South–South cooperation is a term used to describe the exchange of resources, technology, and knowledge between developing countries, also known as countries of the Global South.

On Wednesday, the High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change was held at the China Pavilion of the UN Climate Change Conference COP25. Representatives at the forum discussed the issues of strengthening South-South cooperation on climate change, promoting common development and achieving green and low-carbon sustainable development, among others.

Chinese Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Zhao Yingmin, UN Under-Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin, UN Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Qu Dongyu, UN Office for South-South Cooperation Director Jorge Chediek and others attended the forum.

A Chinese representative told the forum that developing countries are the biggest victims of climate change, and that they have not only suffered the adverse effects of climate change, but also face urgent tasks such as development, poverty reduction and health issues.

To confront climate change, China has actively devoted itself to promoting South-South cooperation on climate change, providing support to other developing countries within its capacity, and sharing useful experience and valuable practices on addressing the issue and realizing green and low-carbon development, said the Chinese representative.

The successful signing of the Paris Agreement and its implementation details shows the irreversible trend of global green and low-carbon sustainable development, and also lays the institutional foundation for all parties to cooperate in dealing with global climate change after 2020, the Chinese representative added.

"We firmly adhere to multilateralism, especially in upholding the Paris Agreement. We wish the UN Climate Change Conference to focus on negotiations on the remaining issues of the Paris Agreement. We should all take a clear-cut stand on multilateralism, and oppose unilateralism and protectionism. We should especially be wary of and prevent unilateralism and protectionism from undermining global economic growth confidence, which will damage the efforts of the international community in responding to climate change," said Chinese Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Zhao Yingmin.

The Paris Agreement is an agreement signed in 2016 within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP25 officially opened in Madrid, Spain on Dec.2, with delegates discussing measures to implement the Paris Agreement.
