Storyline

A pair of twin baby pandas Saturday met visitors for the first time in a zoo in Brugelette, Belgium, charming people with their cuteness.

Born on Aug 8, the furry twins -- Bao Di and Bao Mei -- are now a major attraction in the Pairi Daiza Zoo. The twins' mother, Hao Hao, was loaned by the Chinese government to Belgium in 2014.

The twins have just been reunited with their mother after spending the first few months of their life in a nursery.

"This morning I checked everything. I checked the baby weight and the two babies already passed the seven kilos and also the mother is relaxed and stronger," said Liu yang, caretaker of the pandas.

Pairi Daiza Zoo now has the largest panda family in Europe. The pair of giant panda cubs were the second and third cubs born in the zoo, following the June 2016 birth of Tian Bao, the first giant panda ever born in the European country.

And the cute cubs have won visitors' hearts.

"Adorable, super cute. We've been following their development on Facebook and Instagram since they were born," said a visitor.

"They are very small. They're not being very active today. Pandas sleep a lot in general and even more when they're cubs," said another visitor.

The panda twins will likely stay in the Pairi Daiza Zoo for the next few years. After that the plan is to move to China, where there are several hundred pandas in captivity and a thousand in the wild.

Panda cubs were also recently born in the Berlin zoo. The pandas, like in other places, are part of China's global panda conservation program.

"Reproduction of pandas in captivity can help to grow a wild population again," said Mathieu Goedefroy, spokesman for the Pairi Daiza Zoo.
