Storyline

East China's Shanghai has developed a series of methods and systems in improving the city's elder-care service with digital technology and big data.

In Yangpu welfare house, every bed is equipped with sensors which can detect the physical index of people and pass the data to a terminal in the corridor, so that staff can easily see the elders' heartbeats, sleeping condition, and times of turning over and leaving bed.

"Sometimes I have a uncomfortable feeling and can't sleep well because of rapid hear beat. This reaction will be delivered [to the terminal] over there," said Tao who lives in the welfare house.

In addition to the 94 beds inside the facility, the welfare house's digital service also covers 32 nearby families of the aged people.

Changning District has over 200,000 aged people, which accounts for 37.5 percent of the district's population, and the aged population has been all covered by an intelligent elder-care system.

In the intelligent elder-care big data center, staff are monitoring changes of relevant data in real time through a monitor including the work of elder-care counselor and the use of elder-care cards.

"We tag the aged people based on their situations so we can accurately match them with proper elder-care services, policies and available resources," said Meng Gang, director of the Center for Age Programs in Changning.

For instance, the house of 82-year-old Zhang has installed emergency-detecting sensors as well as an emergency phone. She also receives an accident insurance which is provided to elders above the age of 60. Lately Zhang had a fracture accidentally, and the elder-care counselor soon brought her documents of claim settlement.

The intelligent elder-care platform in Changing is planning to integrate more online services in the future to build a "welfare house without walls."
