Storyline

The Nanchang Destroyer, which is China's first Type 055 guided-missile destroyer and shows the highest level of China's surface ship construction, took only two years and a half from its launch to its commission in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Sunday in the port city of Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province.

The launching ceremony was held for the first ship of the new 10,000-ton destroyer at Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai on June 28 in 2017. On April 23 in 2019, the Nanchang Destroyer with hull number 101 made its first public appearance at the naval parade marking the Chinese navy's 70th founding anniversary.

"What we've done since we received the vessel is to sow a seed and be a pioneer. When we put this ship into service, we can be a leader in facing major tasks," said Chen Weigong, political commissar of Nanchang Destroyer of the Chinese Navy.

From the third generation to the fourth generation of destroyers, the Nanchang Destroyer is undoubtedly a typical representative that manifests the highest level of China's surface ship construction.

"In this process, the crew must not only monitor the quality of the ship's construction, but also learn a variety of new equipment, so as to form our combat capability more quickly," said Zhou Minghui, captain of the Nanchang Destroyer of the Chinese Navy.

The Nanchang Destroyer has a displacement of 10,000 tons, which is twice the size of that of the destroyer on active duty. It has a more advanced power system, good maneuvering characteristics, highly integrated acquisition and processing capabilities of information.

"From the perspective of the overall concept of construction, this vessel is very modern and intelligent. This is also a big change from the past," said Zhou.

As a newly designed and built ship, the Nanchang Destroyer has the largest variety of weapons among the naval vessels of its kind on active duty. It has the main artillery with the largest diameter, the newest secondary artillery and various weapons including super rapid bloom offboard countermeasures (SRBOC). The one that gets the most attention is the vertical transmitting unit.

"I think the Type 055 destroyer is also the product of our scientific and technological development to a certain stage. We should have this capability to fulfill the mission and obligations of a big country and to safeguard our maritime interests," said Zhou.
