Storyline

Railway stations across China have taken several measures including setting up special trains and waiting areas for children to better serve migrant workers during the Spring Festival travel rush.

A great number of workers in southwest China's Sichuan Province have relocated away from their families to find work in other cities, such as in south China's Guangdong Province.

To help those migrant workers get home for the Lunar New Year celebrations, railway authorities arranged for a special train. The train, carrying more than 1,300 migrant workers, set off from Dongguan City of Guangdong Province on Thursday and arrived in Chengdu City of Sichuan Province on Saturday.
"We adopted the transport plan with the largest capacity. The train had 19 cars, most of which are designed with hard seats. The train could carry about 1,600 to 1,700 passengers. We wanted to help the migrant workers return home for the Spring Festival," said Liu Chengkuan, a staff member at the Chengdu passenger transport section.

Meanwhile, for those who are not able to make it back home, railway authorities have devised a plan to ensure the safety of the children visiting their parents during the festival by setting up "little migrant bird" classes at several train stations such as in Dazhou City, where children can draw pictures, read books and play with toy blocks.

(The 'little migrant bird' class) is a very interesting place for children. It is free and safe. Children can have fun there instead of running around. And parents are more relieved," said Zhang Yuanxia, a passenger.

"We have recruited 11 warm-hearted, careful and patient volunteers, to offer the traveling children with services including writing, story-telling, homework tutoring and others at the 'little migrant bird' class, so as to provide them with a safe and comfortable environment while waiting for their trains," said Fan Juan, a staff member at the Dazhou Railway Station.
