Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Myanmar will bring the China-Myanmar cooperation under the Belt and Road framework into the implementing stage and steer the all-round cooperation onto the fast lane, said Myanmar Minister of Commerce Than Myint.

Than Myint said that Xi’s visit provides a precious opportunity for the two countries to enhance bilateral cooperation as they’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties during an interview in Naypyitaw with China Central Television.

The minister said: "The visit by the Chinese President will further deepen the friendly relations and enhance the mutual understanding. The two countries will accelerate the pace of cooperation. There are a number of projects ready for cooperation, such as the 'Belt and Road' and the Y-shaped China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. The two sides have reached consensus on these projects."

On the Kyaukpyu deep-water port for which the contract signing was witnessed by President Xi, the minister said: "The development of the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone will provide plenty of job opportunities for the local people and will connect the inland provinces of China and the western part of Myanmar. It is a win-win project."

Than Myint has studied carefully the process of China's reform and opening-up and hopes that Myanmar would learn the experience from China and, through the Belt and Road cooperation, get the driving force from China's development.

"As a neighbor with a profound 'Paukphaw' (fraternal) feelings for China, Myanmar would like to learn from the development experience of China. Our country is in the process of development and need investment and technology from China to boost our products in both quantity and quality. We need to learn more about China's reform and opening-up, especially about how China stimulates economic development through management," said the minister.
