Storyline

China's Spring Festival Gala on Friday paid special tribute to medical workers and the people of Wuhan fighting coronavirus outbreak in a special program.

Acted by six well-known China Central Television (CCTV) hosts, the special program "Love is a bridge" described how frontline virus fighters in the central Chinese city have been dealing with the coronavirus epidemic at the hospitals during the New Year holiday.

Due to the further spread of the epidemic, the extra segment was temporarily added at the run-down hours before the actual show started, which is normally a carefully planned one.

Against the backdrop of scenes of medical workers in protective body suits, the hosts offered their best wishes to the busy medical workers.

"We had not conducted any rehearsal before we walked onto the stage, which may be the shortest preparation time for the hosts in the history of the Spring Festival Gala. However, the shortest preparation time truly reflects the public's greatest missing and concerns to the virus fighters," said Bai Yansong.

Kang Hui, Bai's colleague, said the whole nation has been involved in the fight against the new virus.

"In a matter of days, General Secretary Xi Jinping has made a series of instructions, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council have paid great attention, local departments have carried out measures quickly, health experts and doctors have devoted themselves to working and all Chinese people have expressed great concern and support. All this means that a war without gunpowder smoke has begun. Scientific prevention and control with our confidence is the best vaccine for epidemic fight. With great unity, there is no obstacle we cannot get over," said Kang Hui, Bai’s colleague, who often reads the main evening news.

The anchors also sent a message of confidence to people in the quarantined Wuhan and other areas, passing them the power from the whole society.

"Isolating virus never means isolating love. Let's cheer them on, warm them when they need most," said Ouyang Xiadan.

"Not getting infected is your biggest contribution to the epidemic fight," said He Hongmei.

Shui Junyi also expressed thanks to blessings and care from foreign countries.

"We also want to thank friends from all over the world for their concern and care to China's virus fight. Please trust China and everything will be fine," he said.

Hai Xia showed great confidence in the virus fight.

"We have the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the support of all Chinese people. We have the greatest confidence to march forward by using the most transparent public information and making the most meticulous protective preparation, the best scientific prevention and treatment and the strongest guarantee. We will definitely win the battle against the virus," she said.

The Spring Festival Gala, usually abbreviated in Chinese as "Chunwan", is the most-watched live TV program in China. Many families across the country gather on the eve of the Spring Festival to tune into the show since it first aired in 1983.

This year, there were over 1.1 billion clips on the Spring Festival gala's website, and about 589 million viewers watching the TV coverage by the end of Friday.
