"There may be someone who try to get political and economic gains from the current situation or even push for the so-called 'decoupling' of our peoples. "Internationally, everyone should follow the advice of the WHO, which is not in favor or even against cutting off people's exchanges and trade. I think this is a scientific and reasonable attitude. The United States has introduced measures that may have been meant to protect its people, and every government has the responsibility to protect its citizens. But how to protect its people better, and how can it be more conducive to international cooperation to prevent the spread of the virus, I think everyone should make a prudent choice."

Storyline

China's Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai said that people should guard against any "political virus" that prevents China and the United States from joining hands to counter their common challenges at the Forum on China-U.S. Relations on Saturday in San Diego.

First of all, the ambassador paid respect to the doctors, scientists, medical workers and all the people who are fighting against the coronavirus outbreak in China.

Cui said prevention and control of the epidemic is the top priority in China. People's well-being always comes first. China is doing whatever it can and using whatever means it has to curb the spread of the disease and cure the people affected. There is such shared determination and unity in China from the top leadership to the grassroots, from medical professionals to the men on the street. China is fully confident and capable to win the battle against the disease. The Chinese nation will come out of this big challenge better and stronger.

He said that China is doing all this not just for themselves, but for the sake of the regional and global public health and safety and in the interests of the entire international community. China is sharing information and strengthening cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other countries in an open, transparent and responsible way.

Actually, the world has seen similar situations, such as the H1N1 virus, Ebola and many other health challenges. Facts prove that no matter how difficult the case may be, as long as we all work together as members of the international community and in the spirit of solidarity, we will succeed in eliminating the disease and saving lives, said Cui.

Cui stressed that while we are preventing the spread of the virus, we must guard against any "political virus" that prevents China and the United States from joining hands in coping with their common challenges.

"There may be someone who try to get political and economic gains from the current situation or even push for the so-called 'decoupling' of our peoples. Such attempt goes against the humanitarian spirit. It goes against the true interests of our two peoples and should be firmly rejected by all of us," he said.

The ambassador expressed the hope that all countries must heed the scientific advice given by the WHO, and take appropriate measures, which are based on facts, to better cooperate in preventing the spread of the virus.

But how to protect its people better, and how can it be more conducive to international cooperation to prevent the spread of the virus, I think everyone should make a prudent choice," said Cui.
