Storyline

A total of 1,400 assigned medical staff from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Sunday began the preparation work for incoming viral pneumonia patients at the newly-built Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan City, central China's Hubei Province.

The hospital is one of the two emergency specialty field hospitals in Wuhan, the hardest-hit city of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak. With a capacity of 1,000 beds, it is dedicated to treating patients infected with the new virus, who will begin arriving on Monday.

Many of the military medical staff have participated in the fight against SARS in Beijing's Xiaotangshan Hospital in 2003 or in the anti-Ebola mission in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and have rich experience in treating infectious diseases.

"Experts on our team have professional backgrounds in disciplines including virology and air microbiology, and have performed the prevention and control of major emerging infectious diseases for many times. In addition to assisting and guiding virus detection in the hospital, providing biological protection guidance, and promoting the clinical verification of existing physical results, we will also go to the front line to optimize the process by improving the detection speed and screening the suspected cases quickly," said Zhang Shoufeng, a member of the PLA medical team.

Zhang Sibing, head of the Huoshenshan Hospital, said that all the 1,400 medical personnel had arrived at the hospital by 12:00 Sunday, and were busy with group management, training and the final preparation work.

"Since the hospital was handed over, all of us have been busy with the preparations in wards, the pharmacy and the inspection office, making all the preparations before the patients arrive. We are confident and determined to implement President Xi's directive to centralize patients, experts, resources and treatment, and win the battle against the epidemic," said Zhang Sibing.

Located in Caidian District and Jiangxia District in suburban areas of Wuhan, the Huoshenshan and Leishenshan Hospitals are two field hospitals specially designed for treating the viral pneumonia patients.

Both of the two hospitals are constructed following the building model of the Xiaotangshan Hospital in Beijing.

At the height of the SARS outbreak in 2003, the Xiaotangshan Hospital was built in seven days and admitted one-seventh of the SARS patients in the country within two months, creating a miracle in the history of medicine.
