Located on the bank of Huangjia Lake in the Jiangxia District, the Leishenshan Hospital is designed based on the layout of a field hospital. It covers 21.9 hectares which include isolation wards, examination area and resting area for medical workers.
Construction work on the new, 1,600-bed hospital started on Jan. 27 and it will accommodate over 2,000 medical workers.
Modeled after the facility set up in Beijing in 2003 to help tackle the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak, two emergency specialty field hospitals -- the Leishenshan and the Huoshenshan -- have been built in Wuhan to treat patients infected by the novel coronavirus.
On Jan. 23, workers broke ground on the Huoshenshan Hospital, with a capacity of 1,000 beds. The facility was completed Sunday and has started receiving patients since Tuesday.
