Storyline


A total of 26 devoted cooks have been putting in 12-hour shifts to feed the thousands of novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) patients who have been admitted to a temporary hospital in Wuhan City, capital of central China's Hubei Province and also the epicenter of the epidemic.

The temporary hospital at the Wuhan International Conference and Exhibition Center, with a maximum capacity of 1,600 patients, was put into operation on Feb. 5. and is now almost at full capacity.

To ensure the health and well-being of the patients, the hospital has set up its own catering services.

"Now we prepare around 2,000 servings each meal, which totals 6,000 for an entire day. The cost of each serving is around 25 yuan (about 3.58 U.S. dollars)," said a chef.

All of the dishes are prepared following strict guidance from nutritionists.

"We prepare food following the nutritionist's advice every day. We ensure the patients' food are nutritious and good for their health, and it include two meat-based dishes and one vegetable-based one. We're working to provide good and healthy meal to the patients," said the chef.

Since the opening, the cooks have been working 12 hours or more a day, often without a break, due to the lack of manpower.

"We are very busy now because many of our colleagues have not returned to work yet, since Wuhan has been severely affected by the epidemic.
