Storyline

A woman infected with the novel coronavirus on Sunday gave birth to a healthy boy in central Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The mother, Li Xian, was in the 34th week of gestation when she was confirmed of being infected with novel coronavirus on Jan 27. And her husband was also diagnosed with the virus.

To ensure the safety of the pregnant mother and her baby, pediatricians, obstetricians and infectious disease doctors of the General Hospital of Central Theater Command of Chinese People's Liberation Army, decided to perform a cesarean section after emergency consultations.

"If we chose not to have her pregnancy terminated, it would be a tough nut for us to select appropriate medication doses for her to treat pneumonia because it might have adverse effects on both the mother and the fetus. If we had her pregnancy terminated, it would be good to treat her disease, but it may result in preterm birth complications for the baby," said Chen Ying, a senior obstetrician of the hospital.

The one-hour operation ended successfully, with a baby weighing 2.4 kilos at birth.

The woman and the infant were then transferred to the infection ward and the intensive care unit, respectively. Now, they are in stable condition. The results of the infant's two nucleic acid tests associated with the novel coronavirus were negative, according to Yang Xinfeng, head nurse in pediatrics.

"He has very stable vital signs and is a healthy baby. He has also gained much weight since he was born. Our six nurses provide 24-hour special care for the baby," Yang said.
