Storyline


More military medical staff and medical supplies, airlifted by military transport aircraft, arrived in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province and epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak on Thursday morning.

At about 07:00, two Y-20 heavy transport aircraft, with about 200 medical workers and supplies on board, departed from the Tianjin Binhe International Airport in north China.

The medical workers will be tasked with treating patients of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in Wuhan.

Another two Y-20 aircraft of the air force in the Western Command Theater arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province at about 05:30 on Thursday, picking up military medical staff and sending them to Wuhan.

"This batch of medical staff that we have selected are mainly from intensive care medicine, respiratory medicine, infectious disease department and general internal medicine. All of them have rich practical experience. Some of them had been in Xiaotangshan hospital to combat SARS, and some had participated in the prevention and treatment of Ebola. We have adequate supplies, including N95 masks, protective suits and protective goggles. We have full confidence and capability to win the battle against [the virus]," said Yang Haiwei, vice president of the General Hospital of Western Theater Command.

At about 07:30, the aircraft arrived at Wuhan Tianhe Airport.

Meanwhile in northeast China's Liaoning Province, an Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft, carrying more than 100 military medical workers, left Shenyang Xiantao Airport at about 04:30 for Wuhan.

In Zhangjiakou City of north China's Hebei Province a 56-strong medical unit from the 81st Group Army Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army gathered at Ningyuan airport at 06:00.

They also brought some medical supplies with them to aid Wuhan.

"These are mainly protective supplies that the front line are short of, including protective suits, N95 masks and some protective goggles. After arriving at the destination, we will immediately disinfect the place that we are about to be stationed. And we will start our medical work based on the requirements of the headquarters at the front line, including grouping, preparation works to receive patients," said Lu Chuandong, leader of the unit.

The medical unit, carried by a Y-9 transport aircraft, departed the airport at 07:00.

So far, the People's Liberation Army of China have dispatched 4,000 healthcare professionals in three batches, to support Wuhan in its fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.

Meanwhile in northeast China's Liaoning Province, an Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft, carrying more than 100 military medical workers, left Shenyang Xiantao Airport at about 04:30 for Wuhan.
