Storyline

Epidemic prevention has no borders and the international community should strengthen communication and cooperation to respond jointly and actively to the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) outbreak, said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang in Beijing on Friday.

The European Union (EU) health ministers agreed Thursday at an emergency meeting to step up preparations and take a coordinated action to prevent the virus from further spreading across Europe.

European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides said the current outbreak does not call for a ban on Chinese tourists entering the visa-free Schengen zone, and a positive attitude should be taken towards the prevention and control measures adopted by EU member states and China.

Geng said China welcomed the conclusion made by Kyriakides.

"Epidemic prevention has no borders. Facing the epidemic, the international community should strengthen communication and coordination to respond jointly and actively to the outbreak. We hope that the countries concerned will remain calm, scientifically judge, rationally react without overreaction, and respect the authoritative opinions of the World Health Organization (WHO)," said Geng.

"China and the EU have maintained close communication and cooperation since the outbreak. We sincerely thank the European Union and its member states for their support and assistance to China in fighting the epidemic. China is willing to, in an open, transparent, and responsible manner, continue to strengthen communication with WHO and the international community and cooperate with them to fight the epidemic, so as to overcome the disease as early as possible," said Geng.
