Storyline

China's COVID-19 situation has continued to improve with only one new confirmed case of the virus in Wuhan City and zero new suspected cases from local transmission as of Tuesday, according to data from the country's health authorities.

The data from China's National Health Commission (NHC) showed a total of 13 new confirmed cases were reported in China on Tuesday, with one in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, and the other 12 being imported cases brought from overseas.

"From 00:00 to 24:00 on March 17, all the provincial-level regions on the mainland and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 13 new confirmed cases. On this day, 12 new confirmed cases and 21 new suspected cases were reported outside Hubei on the Chinese mainland, and were all imported. It is the first time that zero suspected case from domestic infection has been reported," said NHC spokesman Mi Feng.

Mi added that the number of imported cases has started to increase as infected people travel to China, with most of new recorded infections coming from overseas travelers.

Therefore, the NHC official has urged the adoption of stricter restrictive measures to curb the import of coronavirus cases from overseas.

On March 17, a total of 922 patients were discharged nationwide from hospital upon recovery and 8,056 COVID-19 patients are still undergoing medical treatment as of midnight of Wednesday, including 2,622 in critical condition.

ICU medical staff, especially those in Wuhan, are serving as the last line of defense for the severe and critical patients.

High-intensity and fast-paced work is just daily routine for ICU doctors as they work around the clock to save their patients, as their conditions often change rapidly and doctors have to administer emergency treatment to several patients simultaneously.

Despite the unrelenting pace of every work day in the ICU ward, medical staff are motivated to see patients getting better each day.

"A patient was on the brink of death, but now she can walk. Seeing the smile on her face, we are all very happy and inspired. All our colleagues have been trying their best to save every patient. We spare no effort and will never give up until the last moment. This is our goal," said ICU doctor Zhao Rong.

Zhong Nanshan, renowned Chinese respiratory specialist, noted that other countries should take active measures to control the spread of the virus.

He stressed that "herd immunity" cannot be relied on to solve the problems of the highly infectious COVID-19 while speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in south China's Guangzhou City.

Zhong, head of a National Health Commission high-level expert group and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that there was no evidence showing people can get lifelong immunity after recovering from infection.

"For our work ahead, I think we should not rely on this so-called herd immunity method to solve our problem. COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease with a high fatality rate. For coronavirus, there is no evidence that people can get permanent immunity after an infection. So the most important thing for our next step at this time is to produce an effective vaccine very quickly, which is a very important task at the moment. And of course, this job we are going to do next requires good international cooperation," Zhong told reporters.

Zhong also urged other countries to take active measures to control the spread of the virus at the upstream of its transmission route, which is crucial.

Except for Wuhan, the rest of Hubei has recorded no new confirmed COVID-19 cases for 13 consecutive days in its 16 cities and prefectures as of Tuesday. Medical assistance teams from other provincial-level regions started leaving Hubei on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, scenic spots and restaurants in a number of Chinese cities are resuming operation while heeding to epidemic prevention and control measures.

Local governments in China have hired special buses to carry migrant workers to and from Hubei Province to resume work. The country is also speeding up resumption of main projects in various regions, with governments at all levels rolling out supportive policies and regulations to resume work, while continuing to impose strict control measures of the pandemic.

At the same time, Chinese medical professionals are trying their best to share their experience with global medics.

On Wednesday morning, another team of 13 Chinese medical staff embarked on their journey to Milan, Italy to help their Italian counterparts contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have made full preparations to provide guidance and consultations for COVID-19 control and treatment, so that local experts and medical institutions in Italy can draw from their experience.

In addition to knowledge, experience and goodwill, the team will also bring to Italy nine tons of medical supplies, such as ventilators and face masks.

"Disease knows no borders. One of the practices of a community with a shared future for mankind is that countries should work together in the face of such a major global pandemic and fight against our common enemy," said Chen Zhengfang, head of the cooperation and exchange office of the Zhejiang provincial health commission.

Other Chinese medical missions from Shanghai and southwest China's Sichuan Province are already in Italy to help the fight against the virus.
