Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a special Group of 20 (G20) leaders' summit on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic Thursday, and China is willing to work with other G20 members for positive outcomes, said Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu on Wednesday.

The video summit to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, the G20 Presidency in 2020, will be the first major multilateral event attended by Xi after the COVID-19 outbreak that is spreading globally and has imposed serious political, economic and social impacts, said the Chinese vice foreign minister.

"Gathering major advanced economies and emerging markets, G20 is an important platform for tackling global crises and implementing global economic governance and played an important role in dealing with the 2008 global financial crisis. At this critical moment, it is of great significance that the G20 holds a special summit on COVID-19 to carry out communication and coordination for managing the epidemic and stabilizing the world economy," said Ma.

"Under the leadership and deployment of President Xi Jinping, China has effectively contained the epidemic, which earns high praise of the international community. President Xi's attendance at the special summit shows China's steadfast determination in working with the international community to jointly battle the coronavirus, displays China's responsibility as a major country in promoting international anti-epidemic cooperation, and proves China's positive attitude of enhancing coordination and cooperation of the G20 in stabilizing the world economy," he said.

He said China has following expectations of the Thursday summit.

First is strengthening solidarity. The virus knows no national boundaries, and no country can stay aloof and intact in front of the epidemic. And we can defeat the epidemic, stabilize the economy and restore the order only by working closely together. The G20 members need to enhance solidarity, release strong signal of jointly tackling the challenge and thus boost confidence of the international community.

Second is enhancing cooperation. International cooperation is crucial in stopping fast spread of the virus globally. While making great efforts to effectively contain the virus domestically, China has also provided timely assistance to countries with difficulties as its capacity allows. China has shared experiences with various parties, jointly improved response abilities, provided medical supplies in urgent need, and facilitated relevant purchases in China by various countries. China hopes that G20 members can help each other, cooperate and jointly maintain international public health safety.

Third is strengthening coordination. The epidemic has hit the global economy hard. China is advancing production and work resumption in an orderly manner amid effective control measures, which is playing an important role in stabilizing global industrial chains and supply chains. China expects that various parties would improve macroeconomic coordination, adopt necessary fiscal, monetary and structural policies, promote open markets, and ensure open, stable, safe and smooth operation of global supply chains, so as to play a constructive role in boosting market confidence.
