China expects the upcoming special summit of the Group of 20 (G20) leaders on the COVID-19 pandemic to send positive signal to the world, said Geng Shuang, spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the G20 the extraordinary virtual summit on coping with the novel coronavirus pandemic on Thursday.

"With the COVID-19 epidemic now breaking out at multiple places around the world, spreading extensively, threatening the people's lives, safety and health in various countries and seriously battering the world economy, it is the universal expectation of the international community that all parties could join hands in fighting the epidemic and stabilizing the global economy," said Geng.

"The G20 is an important platform for global crisis response and economic cooperation. It played an important role in dealing with the 2008 international financial crisis.
