The Iranian army on Wednesday opened a 2,000-bed temporary hospital in the capital Tehran as the country struggles to stem the novel coronavirus.
The Tehran International Exhibition Center-turned hospital was set up by the country's Army Ground Force within two days for the treatment of the coronavirus patients with mild symptoms or who are recovering from the disease.
The hospital is divided into three isolation zones with two for male patients and one for female, consisting of general wards, ICUs, operation room and lab equipped with medical devices, and other living facilities. It can accommodate an additional 1,000 beds.
"We build this temporary hospital to shorten patients' hospital stay and temporarily quarantine those who are recovering but still likely to spread the virus instead of letting them go home to stay with families," said Doctor Behzad Moazeni, head of the health and treatment department of Iran's Army Ground Force.
The Iranian Armed Forces, which ordered the Army Ground Force to prepare this hospital, said Wednesday it has the capability to put up 15,000 beds across the country and will set up more similar temporary hospitals if the epidemic gets worse.
"Apart from this temporary hospital, Iran's Army Ground Force has set up 7,000 beds across the country and also participated in the treatment of the coronavirus patients. It also joined the disinfecting work in cities. We set up 310 checkpoints across the country to screen and test those infected ones," said Moazeni.
Iran is the worst-hit country by the coronavirus in the Middle East.
Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education confirmed that 27,017 people in the country had been infected with coronavirus, of whom 2,077 had died as of Wednesday noon.
