China offers aid to 89 countries, 4 int'l organizations to fight coronavirus: official

China has offered support to 89 countries and four international organizations while it is still fighting the the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) domestically, a senior official from the country's foreign aid agency said Thursday.

China, as a big responsible country, is practicing the the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity by offering aid to foreign countries in support of their battle against the epidemic, said Deng Boqing, vice chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency.

So far, China has offered aid to 89 countries and four international organizations in four batches and is working out its fifth aid plan, Deng noted.

"The aid recipients include the countries severely hit by the epidemic and those countries with weak public health systems and epidemic control capacities and also international organizations like the EU (European Union), AU (African Union) and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). In response to the money-raising appeal from the World Health Organization, we donated 20 million U.S. dollars to specifically help relevant countries improve their anti-epidemic and public health capabilities," he said.

Deng said China's emergency aid went to 29 Asian countries, 16 European countries, 26 African nations, nine Latin American countries and 10 South Pacific island states.

"The aid comes in terms of medical supplies and medical technology. The medical supplies include test reagents, masks, protective suits, goggles, forehead thermometers, medical gloves and ventilators. When it comes to the medical technology, we mainly send medical expert teams to share experience and give diagnosis and treatment suggestions. In addition, many Chinese local governments, enterprises, non-government institutions and individuals also participated in this aid campaign," he said.

Deng said it is the country's most intensive and most wide humanitarian aid since the People's Republic of China was founded on Oct. 1, 1949. It has won wide acclaim across the world.

"Now, the global epidemic is still unfolding and China is still at a crucial moment of preventing new cases from coming from abroad while preventing it staging a comeback domestically. The Chinese government will continue to provide anti-epidemic assistance to relevant countries within its reach while fully securing its domestic epidemic control," Deng said.

A total of 413,467 cases of COVID-19 were reported globally as of 10:00 CET (0900 GMT) Wednesday, according to the situation dashboard by the World Health Organization.

The global death toll from COVID-19 has climbed to 18,433, as the virus affected 196 countries and regions.

Outside China, the number of confirmed cases has risen to 331,619, among which nearly 240,000 cases were reported by the six most affected countries with over 20,000 cases each, namely Italy, the United States, Spain, Germany, Iran and France.
